Welbourn set the previous European record last July in Wales |
Robert Welbourn broke his own European record on the first day of the British International Disability Championships. He set a new British and European S10 400m freestyle mark as he met the World Championship qualifying time. "I swam well a few weeks ago and so I knew I was on for good times here," said Welbourn, who clocked four minutes 07.05 seconds in Sheffield. Double Paralympic champion Eleanor Simmonds won her first title of the event in the women's 400m freestyle. Simmonds, who clocked 5:32.03, said: "I really wanted to go under 5:30 so I am little bit disappointed, but it was still a strong swim for me. "I have achieved the qualifying time for the World Championships and that is great." Ben Procter broke the British S14 100m backstroke record twice, clocking 1:06.77 in the heats and 1:06.22 in the final. Paralympic medallist Anthony Stephens also broke the British S5 50m freestyle record on his way to a bronze medal. Charlotte Henshaw and world record holder Elizabeth Johnson battled for victory in the 100m breaststroke, Henshaw eventually taking gold in a time of 1:39.71. The Championships, which run until Sunday, incorporate the trials for the IPC Swimming World Championships in Eindhoven and the Commonwealth Games.
