Welbourn beats European records

Welbourn won gold in the freestyle relay at the Paralympics in Beijing

Lincolnshire swimmer Rob Welbourn has broken two British and European records at the Welsh Disability Short Course Championships in Newport.

The 22-year-old, from Market Deeping, beat his personal best in the S10 400 metres freestyle on Saturday.

His time of 4:02.80 was eight seconds inside his own previous record, and within half a second of the world best.

The Lincoln Vulcans Paralympian then completed the double, swimming the 100m freestyle in 53.35 seconds.

As a result of the wins, Welbourn has booked his place in the 20-strong GB squad for the World Short Course disability swimming Championships in Rio de Janeiro from 24 November.

Also included are Beijing individual gold medallists Ellie Simmonds, Liz Johnson, Heather Frederiksen, Sam Hynd, Sascha Kindred and Dave Roberts.
