Norfolk is aiming for his fourth Australian Open quad singles title |
Paralympic champion Peter Norfolk had few problems as he made a winning start to his quad singles title defence at the Australian Open in Melbourne. The world number one beat American Nick Taylor 6-0 6-0 in his opening round robin match. Norfolk will face world number two David Wagner on Thursday with the top two players after the round robin phase meeting in Saturday's final. But fellow Briton Lucy Shuker lost her women's singles opener. The Somerset-based world number 11 put up a determined effort but lost out to French world number three Florence Gravellier 6-3 2-6 6-4. Shuker now partners Australian Daniela di Toro against Germany's Katharina Kruger and Annick Sevenans of Belgium in the women's doubles semi-finals. Norfolk was in impressive form against the world number four Taylor, dropping just one point on his own serve in the first set. The opening exchanges in the second set proved to be a lot closer and Taylor had a chance to get on the scoreboard in the 10th game, but Norfolk broke Taylor to love again to close out the win.
