Quadriplegic yachtswoman Hilary Lister has reached Bude in her attempt to becomes the first disabled woman to sail solo around the British coast. Lister resumed her record-breaking attempt from Plymouth last month after suffering breathing difficulties prior to sailing from Plymouth to Falmouth. She uses a specially designed boat called Me Too with a "sip-and-puff" system of straws to control it. The straws work the tiller, sails and select five control functions. The Faversham sailor became the first quadriplegic to sail solo across the English Channel in 2005 and was the first quadriplegic woman to sail around the Isle of Wight in 2007. She was wheelchair-bound at the age of 15 because of a progressive neurological disorder, reflex sympathetic dystrophy. Her "round Britain dream" includes 40 day-long sails aims to raise funds and awareness of her charity Hilary's Dream Trust, which helps adults with disabilities or in financial hardship with their dreams of sailing.
