Roberts missed out on winning five gold medals

It has been another impressive display by Wales' Paralympians in Beijing, with 14 golds, three silvers and a bronze.

"Our Paralympians have done Wales proud," said Wales First Minister Rhodri Morgan, who hosts a welcome home celebration in Cardiff Bay on Monday.

"They have continued the feel-good factor that has run through Welsh sport all year."

Dave Roberts was the story of the Paralympic Games by equalling Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson's 11-gold haul.

The 28-year-old from Llantwit Fadre, south Wales, won four golds in the Water Cube breaking three world records.

He won his first gold on the second day of the Beijing Games in the S7 100m freestyle.

He set world records in the S7 400m freestyle (4:52.35), men's S7 50m freestyle (27.95 seconds) and the 4x100m freestyle relay (3:51.43).

Also in the pool, teenager Eleanor Simmonds, who trains in Swansea, became Great Britain's youngest individual Paralympic gold medallist.

The 13-year-old produced a sensational swim to shock her rivals in her 100m final at the Water Cube. She also won the S6 400m freestyle.

Swansea-based Liz Johnson, 22, battled to become 100m breaststroke SB6 champion just 10 days after her mother died from cancer.

Silver medals went to Gareth Duke in the men's SB6 100m breaststroke and Nyree Lewis in the women's S6 100m Backstroke.

In cycling, former swimmer Jody Cundy, 29, from Swansea, celebrated gold in the LC2 1km time trial and men's team sprint (LC1-4 CP3/4).

Also in cycling, Porthcawl's Simon Richardson collected golds in the men's individual pursuit (LC 3), and men's 1km time trial (LC 3-4).

The 41-year-old also picked up a silver in the men's time trial (LC3).

Wrexham's Ellen Hunter, 40, won two golds on a tandem with Aileen McGlynn in the women's individual pursuit (B&VI 1-3) and the women's 1km Time Trial (B&VI 1-3).

Rachel Morris from Milford Haven struck gold in the women's time trial HC A/HC B/HC C.

On the athletics track, Cardiff sprinter John McFall won bronze in the T42 100m.

The 27-year-old was yellow-carded after a false start, but recovered to finish third.

But there was disappointment for Deeside teenager Rebecca Chin, 16, who was denied a silver Paralympic medal in the women's F37/38 discus competition due to a change in re-classification.

In Athens four years ago, Welsh Paralympians won 12 golds, six silver and nine bronze medals.
