Norfolk has been in good form on his return from injury |
Britain's Peter Norfolk recovered from a set down to beat world number one David Wagner in the quad singles at the US Open wheelchair tennis tournament. Norfolk, who has just returned from four months out with a shoulder injury and is the second seed at Flushing Meadows, defeated Wagner 2-6 6-3 6-3.
Norfolk struggled on his serve in the opening set but regained his composure after that to seal the win.
He will play American Nick Taylor in his final round-robin game on Saturday.
It is the first time that quad events have been included at the US Open.
Norfolk was broken twice early in the first set as Wagner built up a 4-1 advantage and went on to take the set.
The Briton, who won gold at the Athens Paralympics, started the second set solidly, breaking Wagner in the second game but the American broke back to level it at 3-3.
But Norfolk broke again in the eighth game to make it 5-3 and then saved a couple of break points on his own serve to level the match.
Wagner went into a 2-0 lead at the start of the third set but Norfolk reeled off six of the next seven games to make it two wins out of two in the competition after his victory over Sarah Hunter in his opening game on Thursday.
In the other round-robin match Nick Taylor beat Sarah Hunter 6-0 7-6.
