Norfolk defends his Florida Open title this week |
Britain's Peter Norfolk had to settle for the runner-up spot at the Pensacola Open Wheelchair Tennis tournament in Florida for the second year in a row. The top seed lost 6-4 4-6 6-1 to American second seed David Wagner, the only player to beat him in the last three seasons.
One of Britain's leading juniors, David Phillipson, won the second draw singles in his first tournament outside Europe.
The 18-year-old beat Brazilian Carlos Jordan 6-1 6-1.
Top seed Phillipson dropped just seven games in his four matches and now goes to this week's Florida Open in Boca Raton ranked inside the world's top 50 for the first time.
But Phillipson and partner Alex Jewitt missed out in the final of the men's second draw doubles, losing to experienced American pair Larry Quintero and Lee Hinson 6-3 7-5 in the last four.
World number one Norfolk will also be in Boca Raton where he is the defending champion.
British women's number one Lucy Shuker and her Dutch partner Korie Homan lost 7-6 (8-6) 6-3 to top seeds Florence Gravellier and Jiske Griffioen in the semi-finals of the women's doubles.
