Kunieda enjoyed a successful tournament in Nottingham |
Top seed Shingo Kunieda won his first British Open wheelchair tennis championships men's singles title with an impressive display in Nottingham. The world number one beat Robin Ammerlaan 6-3 7-5 to complete a full set of Super Series (Grand Slam equivalent) wins.
Esther Vergeer claimed her seventh successive singles title, beating fellow Dutchwoman Korie Homan 6-2 6-0.
David Wagner won the quad singles after a 6-1 6-0 win over Nick Taylor.
Kunieda, who won last September's US Open, the Australian Open in January and May's Japan Open, had reached the final after a 6-1 7-5 win over Ronald Vink while Ammerlaan defeated Satoshi Saida of Japan 6-3 6-2.
But in the final Kunieda took the first set and led 4-1 in the second before Ammerlaan went 5-4 up but the world number one reeled off the next three games to seal the win.
Kunieda was celebrating on the double after he and Saida beat Ammerlaan and Austrian Martin Legner 7-5 6-3 in the men's doubles final.
Vergeer, who has not lost a singles match since February 2003, also added the women's doubles to her successes when she and Jiske Griffioen beat Homan and Maaike Smit 6-4 7-5.
Britain's David Phillipson suffered disappointment when he lost to French player Nicolas Peifer 3-6 6-3 6-3 in the junior boys singles final.
But the 17-year-old's displays over the week will see him become the new British number one.
