Phil Taylor wins Players Championship in Doncaster

Phil Taylor beat Gary Anderson 13-12 in the final to claim the Players Championship in Doncaster.

The 50-year-old, from Stoke-on-Trent, came from 11-9 down and hit a 128 checkout in the deciding leg.

Sunday's triumph was Taylor's first title win since losing his world crown at the Alexandra Palace in January.

"I thought I might never win a title again after the World Championship," he said. "But I've gone away, changed darts and worked really hard recently."

The 15-time world champion added: "It means a massive amount to me to win this and the work has paid off for me.

"Gary played brilliantly throughout the tournament and was great in the final. I'm sure we'll have plenty more battles."

Taylor had earlier trailed Mervyn King 5-0 in his semi-final before prevailing 10-8, while Anderson overcame a dogged challenge from Steve Farmer in his last-four tie to win 10-7.

World champion Adrian Lewis lost to Steve Beaton in the first round and will face Taylor on the opening night of the Premier League at the O2 Arena in London on Thursday.
