Phil Taylor beat James Wade 10-8 in the final to win the Premier League |
Phil 'The Power' Taylor hit two nine-dart finishes on his way to winning the Premier League title for a fifth time. Taylor, who beat James Wade 10-8 in the final to take the £125,000 first prize, became the first player in history to hit two nine-darters in one match. "I've won every title in the PDC and I don't think I can ever do better than this - it's the proudest day of my life," said Taylor. Wade, who picked up £65,000 as runner-up, said: "It was an incredible game." Taylor, who lost in last year's semi-final, added: "Everything I've done for the last 30 years has all come together. It's been my dream to do this." The 49-year old got his first Premier League nine-darter in the second leg of the match, starting with 174, following it up with a maximum and closing it out with a 147 checkout. He repeated the feat in the 15th leg, hitting two maximums and finishing with a 141 checkout. Taylor had earlier beaten Mervyn King 8-1 in the semi-finals, while Wade had defeated Australia's Simon Whitlock 8-6 in his last four tie. The play-offs had been due to take place on Sunday, but they had to be delayed by 24 hours because of a power cut at Wembley.
