Lloyd braced for Taylor challenge

Colin Lloyd
Lloyd thought his chance at the Grand Slam had gone

Chelmsford's Colin Lloyd will play Phil Taylor in the last 16 of the Grand Slam of Darts in Wolverhampton.

Lloyd made it through by virtue of Colin Osborne losing to Brian Woods.

The 36-year-old admitted he did not even realise he had a chance of getting through the group stage after losing his third match.

"I was chatting with a friend when a camera got shoved in my face and I was told if Colin lost I was through and he went down 5-4," Lloyd told BBC Essex.

It has been an inconsistent showing from the world number 10 at the Grand Slam.

He led 3-0 in first group game against Osborne before losing 5-3.

He then thrashed Woods 5-0 but was beaten 5-2 by Tony O'Shea leaving him relying on Osborne's slip-up to go through.

"I think the only thing which is going to help me against Phil is a very big gun," joked Lloyd.

"But the fact I thought I was out should help to relax me although we all know what a top, top player Phil is," he added.

The crowd at Wolverhampton have come in for some criticism for their rowdy behaviour, which has included booing and calling out while players are at the oche.

"If you upset the crowd then they won't forget it and I'd rather have them on my side.

"The thing to do is keep your gob shut and let your arm do the talking," said Lloyd.
