Guernsey showed their cycling dominance over the weekend taking four out of the five categories in the Inter-insular Road Race held on home soil. The senior race was over seven laps of the L'Eree circuit with the Veteran, Junior and Lady's race over five laps. James McLaughlin took the senior race with Paul Brehaut the first veteran, Ann Bowditch the first lady and Terry Wright the first Grand Veteran. Chris Seviour was the only Jersey rider to taste victory with the junior title. As the senior race started and began to climb Pleinmont hill it was clear that the Guernsey riders wanted to make an impact on the race attacked their Jersey counterparts in an attempt to get riders away before finally Tony Bleasdale managed to break away from the group. Rob Smart, Matt Osborn and James McLaughlin broke away and with Bleasdale the four worked as a team to stay five minutes ahead of the chasing group. In that group the three Jersey riders were well marshaled by the seven Guernsey riders and any attacks were soon chased down. With their established lead the Guernsey riders battled it out to decide the overall winner. As has been the case so many times this season McLaughlin launched his break for victory from some distance to sprint to victory by some 14 seconds. Bleasdale took the sprint for second place ahead of Smart and Osborn. Brehaut and Bowditch made a break (Pic Mike Brehaut) |
The largest field of the day was in the Juniors, Veterans and Ladies race which featured ten Jersey riders and fourteen Guernsey Riders. With the pace of the race picking up throughout the early laps the riders slowly began to split up with two distinct groups emerging. Paul Brehaut, Oliver Tracey, Ann Bowditch and Terry Wright represented the Guernsey riders with Chris Seviour and Dave Mayman representing Jersey. As the last lap started Brehaut and Tracey made their move up Pleinmont hill breaking away from the other riders and working together to establish a slight lead over the other riders. Riding down L'Eree hill Seviour caught Brehaut and Tracey, as the trio approached the cup and saucer Seviour made a break and managed to get away from Brehaut. Seviour managed to hold on to take the win despite Brehaut rapidly closing in the final few meters. Tracey came over the line in third place with Ann Bowditch finishing strongly slightly ahead of Terry Wright. In the Under 16 and 14's time trial around one lap of the L'Eree circuit, Alex Wilson was the only rider and he completed the course in 22.32.
