Jamie Burtenshaw saw off Gary Robert and Robert Setters to win round five of the Ian Brown and Arrowsmith Marlowe Cross Country mountain bike series.

Advanced category rider Burtenshaw rode a superb race to finish some distance in front of the two expert riders.

Robert held off a spirited challenge from Setters in the final laps to take his first-ever elite category victory.

Chris Le Page and Philip Touzeau finished third and fourth in the elites category respectively.

Andy Gibson took second in the advanced category ahead of John Mapley and Pete Miller.

Nick Mann continued his perfect record over the five races with another win in the veteran category.

But Mann had a new challenger hot on his heels as Gary Walbridge swapped his time trial bike for a mountain bike to take a shock second place.

Earlier in the day the sports, under-16 and under-14 categories competed, with the race won by sport rider Adam Sunderland, although under-14 winner Alex Falla was narrowly behind for much of the race.

James Mapley took second place in the sports category followed by Tim Luscombe, Phil Setters, Phil Sarchet and Anthony Renouf.

The smallest class of the day, the under-16s, was won by Alex Wilson, with Alistair Martin in second.

The under-14s category was won by Falla, with Michael Mann taking an impressive second place.

Will Falla was third, with Bradley Smith mixing it with many of the older riders to take a creditable fourth place. Juliet Setters was fifth and Alex Martin finished in sixth place.
