Bennati pips Hammond to win stage
cycling
Daniele Bennati of Italy won a sprint finish to take the fifth stage of the Tour of Germany on Friday.

Bennati edged out Briton Roger Hammond, of the Discovery Team, and Australian Baden Cooke in the 219.2km stage from Solden in Austria.

American Levi Leipheimer, sixth in the Tour de France, retained the overall lead after his stage four win.

Austria's Georg Totschnig is second overall, 18 seconds behind, with German Jan Ullrich in third, 56 seconds back.

A six-man breakaway went clear an hour into the stage and built a lead of more than five minutes before being swallowed up in the final kilometre.

The Lampre and Wiesenhof teams drove the pack, from where Bennati surged for his second stage win of the tour.

"Yesterday's mountains were hard, but I recuperated fairly well," said the 24-year-old Bennati, who also took the lead of the points classification as the best sprinter in the race.

"My team trusted me and I have to thank my team mates, who did a fantastic job, I only finished it off. I'm very happy with this second stage win."

Saturday's sixth stage is a 175 km run from Friedrichshafen to Singen.
