Italian sprinter Alessandro Petacchi claimed his fourth triumph of the Giro D'Italia by winning stage eight. The Fassa Bortolo rider came out on top in a race to the line at the end of the 214-kilometre run from Giffoni Valle Piana to Policoro.
Australia's Robbie McEwen, who had won the fifth stage, was second and Tomas Vaitkus of Lithuania third.
Italy's Damiano Cunego maintained his 10-second lead in the overall standings over Saeco team-mate Gilberto Simoni.
