Bradley McGee of Australia won Saturday's prologue time trial of the Giro d'Italia. McGee, who won last year's Tour de France prologue, set a time of eight minutes, 30 seconds for the twisting 6.9km course in the centre of Genoa.
He will now wear the race leader's pink jersey for Sunday's first full stage from Genoa to Alba.
Olaf Pollack of Germany was second with a time of 8:40 while Ukraine's Yaroslav Popovych was third in 8:50.
Defending champion Gilberto Simoni finished 35 seconds off the pace.
That was better than the rider seen as the biggest threat to his Giro crown, Stefano Garzelli, who was 46 seconds behind.
