World Indoor Cup winner Merrien is the favourite to win the new title

A new mixed event has been launched for bowls players in Guernsey.

Bowls Guernsey has voted to create a new competition which will be open to men and women called the Open Singles Island Knockout.

"We think it's going to be a very interesting summer next year when it's first played for," said Bowls Guernsey chief executive Garry Collins.

And Collins says it will be a chance for the men to pit their wits against women's world champion Alison Merrien.

"My money is on Alison Merrien to win, but I think there is a lot of men out there who would be keen to see how they got on against her."
