Drew Lasker scored 39 points in total over the weekend for Plymouth |
The Plymouth Raiders ended their winless home start to the season with a great win over BBL Play-off winners Guildford Heat on Saturday. The Raiders beat the Heat 83-79 to get their first victory at the Pavilions this season in the BBL Championship. And the Raiders followed it up with another win a day later over the Leicester Riders in the BBL Cup. The raiders smashed the Riders by 25 points as they ran away 101-76 winners to make it through to the semi-finals. Drew Lasker put last week's below-par display against the Newcastle Eagles behind him as he top-scored for the raiders against the Heat with 17 points. He was one of five Raiders players to get into doule figures against Guildford along with Gaylon Moore (15), Gavin Love (12), Anthony Martin (12) and Terrence Durham (11). Guildford's Keonta Howell top-scored overall in the match with 23 points, but only three of his other team-mates scored more than five points. Lasker continued his top-scoring form on Sunday against the Riders as he hit 22 points, a total equalled by play-coach DeAntoine Beasley. | I thought we were mightily impressive against a very strong Guildford team, at the end of the day we wore those guys down Plymouth Raiders head coach Gary Stronach |
But the Raiders were four points down at half-time before stepping up a gear in the second half. Gaylon Moore and Kabama Beckles both scored 15 points while Anthony Martin hit 12 as they racked up a 101-76 win - their biggest victory margin this season. "I thought we were mightily impressive against a very strong Guildford team, at the end of the day we wore those guys down," head coach Gary Stronach told BBC Radio Devon. But he was less pleased with his side's first half display against Leicester: "I thought it was critical that we gave them 19 points off turnovers and I had that to say at half time. "Thankfully the guys answered the call and I thought defensively it was probably our best second half of the season."
