The Raiders are hoping to impress European inspectors when they visit |
Plymouth Raiders are to face an inspection to see if they are up to the standard to play European basketball. The club made the semi-finals of the British Basketball League play-offs last season and have aspirations to play in the Eurocup. "We've got a commissioner coming here in the next fortnight," vice chairman Damon Lenszner told BBC Spotlight. "I'm 95% sure we will have permission from the European authorities to allow us to play European basketball." Lenszner has been speaking with the world governing body Fiba about the Raiders' entry into Europe, provided they win the BBL Championship. They want to gain entry in the Eurocup, which is the second tier of European basketball, the sport's equivalent of football's UEFA Cup. | European basketball is massive compared to what it is here in the UK Plymouth Raiders vice chairman Damon Lenszner |
The Raiders' home at the Plymouth Pavilions holds 1460 people, which is under the minimum requirements, but Lenszner hopes to persuade the authorities that they are worthy of a place. "We'll show what we do and how we do it," Lenszner said. "We hope he will help push us in the right direction." "European basketball is massive compared to what it is here in the UK," he added. But the Raiders will have to hope they start winning matches. They lost both their games last weekend to the Everton Tigers and Newcastle Eagles and face a tough match on Saturday against play-off champions Guildford Heat.
