Cann hopes the win will be the start of a successful year |
Jersey's Elizabeth Cann has regained her English National women's singles badminton title, becoming champion for the fourth time in her career. The number one seed beat Helen Davies in straight games, 23-21 21-15, in the final although she had to save three game points on the way. Cann becomes only the second player ever to regain the title three times. She did not return to training until September after back injury from a car crash sidelined her for five months. After missing out on the title narrowly last year, Cann told BBC Jersey she was relieved when the match was over. | I want a medal in Delhi and a good European Championships. |
"It was definitely a tough first, and we were neck and neck up to 15-all in the second - she kept me on my toes throughout the match," she said. "It's good for my confidence and it's good to start the year well. I need to build on this now. "I want a medal in Delhi [at the Commonwealth Games] and a good European Championships before that, for which I'm hoping to be selected." There was less fortune for Jersey's Marianna Agathangelou, who with partner Heather Olver lost their women's doubles final in three games. But it was an epic encounter with the world's number 20 pairing of Jenny Wallwork and Gabby White, as it lasted over an hour and ended 21-19 21-23 21-11.
