 Mann takes up a coaching role in France next week |
Eight-times English champion Julia Mann's career ended in defeat on day two of the World Championships. The 35-year-old lost to Hwang Hye Youn 21-10 21-11 in Madrid and will now join the French national squad as a coach.
She said: "I'd hoped to last longer but I will never forget the Olympics or my Commonwealth Games medals. My one regret is not having a European medal."
Susan Hughes went through and will now face Hwang but Aamir Ghaffar and Craig Goddard bowed out.
Commonwealth bronze medallist Hughes produced a gritty display to beat Russia's Ekaterina Ananina 21-8 21-19.
"It was tough," said Hughes. "It's great to get through and I'm pleased with my form. Now I play Hwang and that won't be easy."
Ghaffar lost to Dutchman Dicky Palyama in straight games while Goddard slipped to a 21-11 21-8 defeat to 10th seed Boonsak Ponsana of Thailand.
European champions Gail Emms and Donna Kellogg reached round two of the women's doubles with a good win over Chou Chia-Chi and Ku Pei-Ting of Taipei but Joanne Nicholas and Natalie Munt went out to Chinese seeds Du jung and Yu Yang.
Scotland's Watson Briggs and Imogen Bankier beat Stilian Makarski and Diana Dimova of Bulgaria 21-15 21-19 in the mixed doubles.
