The New Orleans Saints will return to the Louisiana Superdome on 24 September to play the Atlanta Falcons. The Superdome served as a shelter for thousands of New Orleans residents after Hurricane Katrina in August.
Damage to the venue forced the Saints to play home games in San Antonio and at Louisiana State University.
"Superdome officials are pointing to the Falcons-Saints game on 24 September," NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue said in a statement.
"We are pleased that this historic re-opening will feature the annual renewal of the traditional Falcons-Saints rivalry."
The Superdome, home field for the Saints, was heavily damaged by Katrina and was used to co-ordinate emergency relief activities during the devastation caused by the natural disaster.
