The New Orleans Saints, made homeless by Hurricane Katrina, could be back at the Louisiana Superdome by September. Players and office staff have been told the team will return to its training facility in Metairie in mid-January.
Emergency officials used the facility to co-ordinate relief activities during the devastation caused by Katrina.
Saints owner Tom Benson said: "We are working in Louisiana to play as many games as possible in the Superdome, which may be ready by 15 September."
The Saints' operations were shifted to Texas after the flooding which hit America's Gulf Coast area four months ago.
Damage to the Superdome forced the Saints to play home games in San Antonio's Alamodome and at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge.
The latter venue remains a back-up for next season if the Superdome is not ready in time.
New Orleans have struggled in their season of turmoil, propping up the NFC South division over Christmas with a win-loss record of 3-12.
