Over 1,00 children will compete in a variety of sports |
Over 1,000 schoolchildren on the Isle of Man will compete in a dozen different sports as part of the ninth annual Youth Games on Saturday. The Games are designed to give children between the ages of eight and 14 the opportunity to try out new sports and receive training. Organiser Paul Bridson said: "We hope the Games will prove a starting point for a lifetime's involvement in sport." The Games will start in The Bowl Stadium in Douglas on Saturday morning. Bridson continued: "We want to produce successful athletes who go on to national and international success, but we also want to provide a platform for children who may never have got involved in sport. "Ten years ago many of the sports didn't have an infrastructure, but today more of them have junior leagues and competitions backed up by adult volunteers and coaches." Sports featured are athletics, badminton, basketball, girls football, hockey, cricket, netball, squash, swimming, table tennis, rugby and tennis, and every child who takes part will receive a medal.
