North Korea will support South Korean city Pyeongchang's bid to host the 2014 Winter Olympics, but does not want to host the Games with its neighbours. Bid leader Kim Jin-sun received the backing when he met North Korean International Olympic Committee member Jang Ung in China this week.
"Mr Jang said his country supported the bid and would cooperate wherever possible," said a bid statement.
The countries have also agreed to field a joint team at the 2006 Asian Games.
Pyeongchang lost out to Vancouver for the right to host the 2010 Games.
Almaty (Kazakhstan), Borjomi (Georgia), Jaca (Spain), Sofia (Bulgaria), Salzburg (Austria) and Sochi (Russia) have also tabled bids for 2014.
The final selection will be made in July 2007.
