British swimmers go head-to-head for a place at the Olympics this week when they compete in the National Championships in Sheffield. Competitors must finish first or second in their event and beat the 12th fastest time in the world to qualify.
"I can feel the pressure catching up with me now," world 200m backstroke champion Katy Sexton told the British Swimming website.
"But I will be there with one aim in mind - to reach the Olympics."
Each country can only enter two athletes in each event so a competitive atmosphere is expected at the Pond's Forge pool.
Bill Sweetenham, British performance director, has raised the standards of swimming since his appointment in November 2000. Britain failed to win a single medal at the Sydney Olympics but Sweetenham guided the team to eight medals at the Barcelona World Championships last year.
The trials begin on the 7 April and will also incorporate the Paralympic and European Junior Championship trials.
