England players celebrate qualifying for Beijing |
England's women beat Spain 3-2 at the EuroHockey Nations Championship to seal Olympic qualification for Britain. A Mel Clewlow goal and two Crista Cullen strikes were enough to clinch victory in the third-place play-off.
Clewlow scored from a penalty corner in the 15th minute, while Cullen followed up when her initial shot was blocked to make it 2-0 after 24 minutes.
She scored from a penalty corner in the 50th minute before Spain scored twice late on to make for a tense finale.
Danny Kerry, England women's head coach, said: "The girls are just brilliant and in the first half I couldn't have asked for anymore, but life certainly became nervous in the second period with Spain having more of a go at us.
"Helen Richardson and Anne Panter were fantastic today but throughout the tournament this third-place finish really has been a team effort.
"Now that we have qualified everyone still has a lot to do to ensure we are in the best possible shape for next summer."
In the women's final, Germany beat the Netherlands 2-0. Both nations have already qualified for the Olympics.
Britain's men have yet to qualify for Beijing after England failed to finish in the top three in Manchester.
