England's women's team missed a chance to seal Olympic qualification when they lost 2-1 to Germany in the EuroHockey Nations championship semi-finals. They have another chance to book their place in Beijing when they take on Spain in Saturday's third and fourth place play-off in Manchester.
Goals from Anke Kuhn and Maike Stoeckel put Germany 2-0 ahead by half-time.
Lucilla Wright struck with five minutes to go to give England hope but they were unable to get an equaliser.
They forced four late penalty corners and although they did get the ball over the line, the goal was disallowed by the South African umpire for an infringement.
England coach Danny Kerry said, "We changed our tactics at half-time and came back into the game strongly, but it wasn't quite enough.
"The most important thing now is to prepare well for Saturday's game with Spain."
Spain lost 3-0 to the Netherlands in Thursday's opening semi-final.
