British K1 racers Tim Brabants and Lucy Wainwright both overcame sluggish starts to reach the semi-finals of their respective 500m events in Shunyi.

Brabants overhauled Russia's Anton Ryakhov and Stjepan Janic of Croatia in the closing stages to win his heat.

Brabants said: "You've just got to hold your head together and not push too hard and that's what I did."

Wainwright, who finished third in her heat, said: "I had a terrible start but once I got going I got into my rhythm."

Brabatns was the fourth-datest qualifer in one minute 36.338 seconds.

In the women's K2 500m the British pair of Jessica Walker and Anna Hemmings finished ninth and last in their heat in 1:47.435
