Video - Brabants powers through first heat British canoeist Tim Brabants booked his place in the men's K1 1000m final in style at the Shunyi Olympic park. Brabants, 31, powered over the course to finish first in a time of three minutes 27.828 seconds, well ahead of his rivals, in the opening heat. The first place finish means Brabants qualifies for Friday's final and will not have to contest a semi-final. The Sydney bronze medallist from Chertsey, Surrey, goes in Tuesday's K1 (individual kayak) 500m heats. | Some people said it looked easy but it is never easy in an Olympic Games | Brabants' main rival in Beijing, Canadian 26-year-old Adam van Koeverden, won the second heat in a slightly slower time. Van Koeverden, 2004 Olympic champion in the K1 500m event, coasted over the line in a time of 3:29.622 for the longer course, two seconds outside Brabants, and will also progress directly to the final. "It was comfortable rather than easy," said Brabants. "Some people said it looked easy but it is never easy in an Olympic Games when you have other world class athletes there. "It went exactly to plan. I knew I was strong enough to win that heat with the idea of going straight to the final. "That is a big advantage because tomorrow I've got the 500m heats and it will give me a day of rest before the 500m semi, which is going to be hard on Thursday." Lucy Wainwright, in the women's K1 500m heats, and the K2 500m pair of Anna Hemmings and Jessica Walker all compete for Britain on Tuesday.
