Brabants won K1 100m gold at May's European Championships

Flatwater canoeist Tim Brabants is heading to his third Olympics after being named in the British team.

The Sydney bronze medallist and current European champion was selected for the kayak single races over 500m and 1000m.

Fellow European champion Lucy Wainwright will go to her second Games in the 500m kayak single.

But James Train (C1 1000m) and K2 500m pairing Jess Walker and Anna Hemmings must wait until 26 June to find out if they have secured spots.

Brabants said: "This is my third Olympic Games, but this year I've had my best preparations and results going into any Games.

"This is the one I'm the most excited about in terms of a result and bringing home a medal for Team GB."

Wainwright said: "Achieving success in Beijing has been the main focus of the last four years of training."

British Canoe Union performance director John Anderson said: "In Tim Brabants, Team GB have a great prospect for a gold medal.

"Across GB Canoeing as a whole, all of our athletes have already medalled internationally and are capable of being on the podium in Beijing."

The fate of the women's double kayak rests on a complex situation involving the Spanish team.

Spain must decide whether to enter a team for the K2 or K4 competitions - Britain believes they will enter K4, leaving the remaining K2 place for Walker and Hemmings.
