Paddy Bradley kicked over five points at Celtic Park |
Cavan claimed victory in Sunday's high scoring Dr McKenna Cup Section B opener at a rain-soaked Celtic Park. The impressive Paddy Bradley notched up four points for Derry in the first half but Cavan led 0-10 to 0-9 at the break.
The finishing from both sides was clinical in the opening 35 minutes but it was a scrappy second half.
Andrew McCartney twice came close to netting for Derry although it was Cavan who seized the initiative and the visitors ran out easy winners.
Michael Cunningham picked up the man-of-the-match award in his first senior appearance for Cavan.
"We came up here and I told the lads it was all about working hard and going out on the field and being honest," said Breffni boss Donal Keoghan.
"We worked very hard although conditions were not ideal for playing good football.
"However, we racked up 17 points, put some good moves together and I was very happy with the performance.
"I said at half-time we had to go out and play like we did in the first 15 minutes.
"I was very pleased with the new players who came in including Michael Cunningham and Jonathan Crowe at wing-back.
"It's all about a huge work ethic and that's what we are going to be about this year."
