The North-West side moved into the top half of the table thanks to their win at Cliftonville and Lisburn Distillery's defeat at home to Crusaders.
Institute had to come from behind to claim their first win in three matches.
Barry Patton scored his second goal for Cliftonville since his transfer from Omagh Town in the 14th minute to put the home side into the lead.
Paul McLaughlin got Institute level with a 25th minute goal by heading home from an Adrian Creane cross.
It was Creane who then scored Institute's second two minutes before half-time.
Stuart Bratton made the game safe when he scored near the end to leave Cliftonville to reflect on another disappointing result.
Marty Tabb's Reds have not for 11 league games, their last victory being just before Christmas.
The north Belfast team now look to have dropped out of the running for a top six place.
