Glenavon held by Newry

Newry 2-2 Glenavon

Newry Town remain seven points adrift at the bottom of the Irish League's Premier Division after Saturday's draw at the Showgrounds.

Victory would have moved Ollie Ralph's side to within four points of Glenavon.

Recently-appointed Glenavon boss Alfie Wylie was back at the club which sacked him earlier in the season and he saw his new side take the lead twice.

Steven Hyndes got the opener on 17 minutes, his shot taking a slight deflection after a good lay-off from former Northern Ireland international George O'Boyle.

That was the way it stayed until the 68th minute when Newry got a penalty following Conor Larkins's foul on Martin Reilly.

Robbie Brunton scored from the spot for Newry's first goal in six home matches.

Glenavon were then awarded a penalty themselves which central defender John Devine scored to restore the Lurgan side's lead.

But Newry responded again to score their second equaliser five minutes from the end.
