Hammers boss remaining positive

Stuart Douglas
Douglas believes his side can achieve the improbable to make the final

Lakeside Hammers co-promoter Stuart Douglas insists they can still reach the Elite League League play-off final.

The Hammers head into Monday's second leg at the Arena Essex Raceway needing to beat rivals Wolverhampton Wolves by 21 points.

Despite the odds being stacked against them, Douglas told BBC Essex he was confident it could be done.

"It's a monumental task, but I think monumental tasks are something this team's quite good at," he said.

"I think it's fair to say all the riders didn't perform to their full potential last Monday, but we know at our home circuit we're capable of beating anyone."

The Essex side lost the first leg at Wolverhampton 56-40.

Wolves also have a four point bonus to be added for finishing higher in the regular season.

Douglas explained they had to make the most of their home advantage count if they were to have any chance of making the play-off final.

"It has to be a very special evening," he said.

"The atmosphere has to be white hot, the crowd has to get behind the team and the riders do feel it.

"When there is a pressure atmosphere there, the riders do feel it and they can rise to the occasion."
