Cook is undeterred by the Hammers' initial four point deficit
Lakeside Hammers team boss Jon Cook is confident that his team can reach the Elite League play-off final.
The Hammers head into Monday's first leg at Wolverhampton with a four-point deficit as a result of finishing below them in the regular season.
But Cook told BBC Essex: "The fact we are extreme underdogs will play into our hands, as there's no doubt the best speedway rider is a relaxed one.
"We're in the play-offs not just to enjoy the moment, but make the final."
Cook added: "It's going to be a very tough ask, but I've got faith that the boys can do a containing job up at Wolverhampton on Monday and then leave us with every opportunity to force our way through on Monday week at the Raceway.
"If we have to win by eight to 10 points at our place, then I think we've got every opportunity to do that."
Cook admitted that both the Swindon Robins and Wolverhampton had been a 'class apart' from the other Elite League clubs this season.
But he believes his Essex side, who finished 19 points behind their West Midlands opponents, could still feel confident about making it through to the final.
"We've been to Wolverhampton twice this year and posted good results," he said.
"One of those occasions we were without Lee Richardson and we've really struggled at reserve up there.
"But Stuart Robson has been coming into some terrific form, so I think we'll be a different kettle of fish there."
The second leg of the semi-final will be held at the Arena Essex Raceway on Monday week (28 September).
