Cubs set for new speedway league

Speedway

Redcar Cubs have confirmed they will compete in the newly-formed National Speedway League in the 2009 season.

The new division replaces the Conference League and incorporates new teams, such as Bournemouth Buccaneers, as well as existing outfits.

Riders will have averages and each team must adhere to a 42.50 limit.

Meetings are expected to take place on Saturday afternoons and Thursday evenings, where they will follow Bears Premier League fixtures.

Cubs team manager Jason Pipe is currently talking to prospective team members and hopes to be in a position to confirm some signings over the next week.

"Our aim is to bring on our own assets and blend them in with a bit of experience to help them along," said Pipe.

"It is impossible to field a team that would be all our own assets and to be competitive at the same time.

"The plan is to have only a couple of riders that are contracted to other clubs and the other five places would be made up of our own assets," he added.
