Panthers rider Simota breaks neck

Speedway

Sam Simota is unlikely to ride for Peterborough Panthers in the Elite League again this season after he broke his neck while racing in Hungary.

The Czech rider has undergone surgery to put metal plates in his neck after the crash with his Polish club Lodz.

Panthers team manager Trevor Swales said: "I was talking to Sam and he's been transferred by helicopter to the Czech Republic with a neck brace.

"He was due to have an operation on Tuesday. We wish the lad well."

Swales told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire that he is working hard to bring in a replacement for Thursday's match against Poole at the Showground.

In front of our own fans, losing at home is not an option

"I've got a good idea of who we can bring in but nothing's sorted yet," he said.

"That'll be sorted and cleared on Wednesday, hopefully, as I know who I want and I just need to speak to their respective promoters to get permission to speak to them."

Panthers will aim to continue their unbeaten home run after another heavy away defeat at Ipswich on Monday.

After the 60-31 reverse Swales said: "We've just got to up our game if we want to win a match away from home and we've got to be so careful not to slip up at home.

"Poole are a good, solid team but we've got to turn a disastrous day into a good day on Thursday because in front of our own fans, losing at home is not an option."
