Chaz Davies has made a positive start to his World Supersport season

Herefordshire motorcycle racer Chaz Davies feels he has put down a marker after gaining his first podium finish in the World Supersport Championship.

Davies is confident he and his Triumph BE-1 Racing team can build on their third place in Valencia.

"Every weekend the bike is getting better and I am getting more comfortable with it," he said.

"We just need to keep developing the bike the way things are going and the goal is to keep the podiums coming."

The departure of last season's champion Cal Crutchlow to Superbikes at the end of last season has opened up the title race to a degree and Davies is well aware of who poses the major threats.

"Kenan Sofuoglu is the guy who I was racing quite hard at the weekend. He is first on the all-time Supersport wins list so he is no slouch," he told BBC Hereford and Worcester.

"Then we have got a Spaniard, Joan Lascorz, who is a very good rider and who has been very strong over the last few years while there is Irishman, Eugene Laverty, who I know very well.

"Between those three and Cal nobody else has had a look-in over the last 16 months so it is nice to be up there with them."

Davies acknowledges his positive start to the season means he is no longer a surprise package.

"I think we have shown we can be consistently up towards the front as we have had the fastest lap in one race and then a fourth and a third so we are there or thereabouts," he said.

"There are a few circuits I need to learn for the rest of the year but I don't see that being too much of a problem.

"We can just get stuck in each weekend and see if we can repay the team again and again."

The next round of the World Supersport Championship will be staged in Assen in the Netherlands on Sunday 25 April 2010.
