Haga moved back into title contention with his double win |
Noriyuki Haga took a win double at Monza but James Toseland increased his Superbikes championship lead with fourth- and second-placed finishes. Toseland's closest title rival Max Biaggi slipped to third in the standings after finishing third in race one and fifth in race two.
Troy Bayliss followed Naga home in race one and was less than 0.2 seconds behind Toseland in race two.
Toseland now has 229 points, with Haga on 194 and Biaggi on 191.
The Briton lost his record of winning a race at every round this season but was a relieved man after his choice of a soft-compound rear tyre in race one cost him a podium finish.
After race two Toseland said: "I think we had a perfect set-up with a harder tyre and I rode as hard as I could.
"Once Haga came past I really dug deep and tried to stay with him."
Haga was delighted with his performances which have put him back in title contention.
"I'm very happy to win both races, I never won here before today," he said.
