The North West 200 has been handed a 150,000 cash boost from Sport Northern Ireland in conjunction with the Department of Culture Arts and Leisure.

Professor Eric Saunders, Chairman of Sport Northern Ireland, said the money was "primarily for the safety upgrading of the North West 200 course".

"The investment will primarily be for the resurfacing of roads on the course which have been deemed a safety hazard.

"More safety bales will be bought and placed strategically on the circuit."

"Funding is also available for the purchase of security fencing which will be installed at various points of the circuit and the carrying out of a series of safety measures to the paddock area," he added.

Meanwhile John McGuinness has confirmed that he will ride in the 250cc class at next week's event.
