James Toseland's bid to finish third in the World Superbike standings failed with a sixth-place finish in race two of the final round in France. The Briton took third in the opening race, with Japan's Noriyuki Haga, third on points going into the Magny-Cours round, crashing out on his Yamaha.
But Haga was third in the second race, won by Italy's Lorenzo Lanzi, to seal overall third - with Toseland fourth.
The first race was won by Ten Kate Honda's Chris Vermeulen of Australia.
New world champion Troy Corser came fifth in the first race and fourth in the second to finish the season 54 points ahead of closest rival and compatriot Vermeulen, who did not complete the second race.
Briton Chris Walker came fifth in the second race on board his PSG-1 Kawasaki.
