Jani was watched by 20,000 fans
Sauber test driver Neel Jani has become the first person to drive a Formula One car in the Middle East after christening the new Bahrain circuit.

The 20-year-old Swiss completed the demonstration run on Thursday in front of a 20,000-strong crowd at speeds of up to 170mph.

"I'm very proud that I was the first to drive a Formula One car in the Middle East," he said.

"It's also the first time that I have legally jumped a red light."
