German Formula One driver Nick Heidfeld has signed a preliminary contract to drive for the Jordan team next season. The 26-year-old has been looking for a new team since being released by Sauber at the end of last season.
But Heidfeld, who was reported to be earning $4.5m-a-year at Sauber, will have to take a pay cut to join Jordan.
He insisted: "Money is not important for me. I just want to stay in Formula One. I am really looking forward to this challenge."
Heidfeld found himself out of a job at Sauber after they signed Italian Giancarlo Fisichella and Brazilian Felipe Massa.
But he will jet out to Spanish city Jerez on Wednesday to test the new Jordan car.
Last month Heidfeld spoke about his torment at the prospect of not securing a drive for the 2004 championship.
"It would be terrible if I am not in Formula One next season," he confessed.
"I am only 26 and believe I am a good driver."
