Frentzen has been released despite his podium finish on Sunday |
Formula One team Sauber have released drivers Nick Heidfeld and Heinz-Harald Frentzen. Frentzen has collected 13 points this season and finished third in Sunday's US Grand Prix.
Heidfeld has gained only six points in 2003, including four for his fifth place in Indianapolis.
Sauber have already confirmed that Jordan's Giancarlo Fisichella will be one of their drivers for next season. That would appear to open the door for Heidfeld to go the other way after Eddie Jordan expressed an interest in the 26-year-old German last month. Sauber are also expected to sign Ferrari test driver Felipe Massa as Fisichella's team-mate.
"It is a shame to lose them," explained team boss Peter Sauber.
"But it is better to do so than have poor results."
There is speculation that Ferrari are lining up either Massa or Fisichella to partner Michael Schumacher in 2005, depending on their performances with the Ferrari-affiliated Sauber team next season.
