Team Aon driver Tom Chilton has won the British Touring Car Championship Independent Drivers Trophy for the first time.

The 25-year-old from Reigate clinched the title by two points having gone into the last three races of the season at Brands Hatch 22 points off the lead.

He told BBC Surrey: "I've never had my heart rate so high as in the last race.

"I had every man and his dog behind me trying to overtake me, but I couldn't let one car through."

He added: "To get a Championship win is the best thing we could do.

"I've never won it or thought about it before. I've always been a couple of places out of it.

"I had a lot of luck but some guys buckled under the pressure.

"I ended up keeping my cool. It was a lot of really hard work and it all paid off."

Chilton managed two top-five finishes including a podium finish in the final race.
