Lowes' win at Cadwell Park was his third of the season |
Lincoln's Sam Lowes extended his British Supersport Championship lead with victory at Cadwell Park. The GNS Racing Honda rider, who started on pole for the first time this season, beat James Westmoreland into second place and now leads him by 35 points. Fellow title-chasers Graeme Gowland and Billy McConnell saw their hopes recede as both crashed on lap four. Lowes told BBC Lincolnshire: "Cadwell's my local track so I couldn't have asked for the win at a better place." He added: "It's a big race for me, and even bigger when you look at the championship and the position I'm in. "To do this proves that I'm ready to fight for the championship." Lowes, who faced a battle to make the start of the race after clutch problems in the morning warm-up, was passed by Boston's Ben Wilson on the Gearlink Kawasaki into the first corner but quickly regained the lead before losing it again to McConnell. He inherited the lead once again when CAME Yamaha rider McConnell fell at Mansfield, with Gowland crashing from his PTR Honda at Park on the same lap. | Cadwell's my local track so I couldn't have asked for the win at a better place |
From then on Lowes was never troubled as he cruised to his third victory of the season ahead of Westmoreland on the second CAME Yamaha and Wilson, with the race red-flagged on the final lap following a crash. But Lowes' twin brother Alex had a difficult weekend, qualifying in 17th after struggling with the Seton Interceptor Yamaha and retiring from the race with mechanical problems. Elsewhere Woodhall Spa's Steve Plater finished 12th for HM Plant Honda on his return to the National Superstock 1000 championship following a three-month injury lay-off, with Lincoln's Lee Jackson just outside the points in 16th on the Buildbase Kawasaki. In the 125GP class Lincoln's Leebob Jackson took seventh place.
