Bennetts founded West Surrey Racing in 1981 |
West Surrey Racing boss Dick Bennetts has revealed he is considering switching the team to the World Touring Car Championships. They are taking part in rounds of the WTCC during a seven-week break in the British Touring Car Championship. Bennetts told BBC Surrey: "It's a way for us and Colin Turkington to test the water and a possible opportunity for the future. "We like the idea of it. It's a step up for both Colin and us as a team." He added: "The idea was to see how we stand up against the current teams - both independent and works, and for Colin to see how he gets on." WSR made their debut in rounds nine and ten in Portimão, Portugal, last weekend, and Bennett was happy with their first showing. "We were very encouraged and pretty pleased with ourselves," he said. "To be the fastest independent first time out and make the top ten was a very good weekend." The 2009 British Touring Car Champions are entered in the WTCC rounds held at Brands Hatch this weekend and at Brno, Czech Republic on August 1. They aim to enter their BMW 320si in the final rounds in Okayama and Macau once they have completed further sponsorship deals.
