Sussex made it through to the quarter-finals of the FP t20 despite an eight-wicket defeat by Surrey at Arundel.

Batting first, the South Group leaders slumped to 73-7 before limping to 121-8 from their 20 overs.

Former Sussex man Rory Hamilton-Brown then hit an unbeaten 66-ball 87 to carry the visitors home with 10 balls to spare.

Sussex remain top of the table on net run-rate and are guaranteed a last-eight spot thanks to results elsewhere.

A fierce opening spell of bowling from former Australia all-rounder Andrew Symonds and ex-Hampshire seamer Chris Tremlett had Sussex in all sorts of trouble, with Matt Prior, Ed Joyce, Chris Nash and captain Murray Goodwin all departing in the first four overs.

The late-order efforts of Chad Keegan (26) and Ollie Rayner (25 not out) were then not enough to trouble Surrey.

Despite losing Steve Davies and Jason Roy early in their reply, Surrey skipper Hamilton-Brown ensured his side's hopes of a quarter-final berth remain alive.
