Ricky Wells contributed 11 points for Stoke in the draw against Scunthorpe |
Stoke Potters ended their Premier Trophy campaign with a last-gasp 44-44 draw against Scunthorpe Scorpions. Stoke trailed by four points heading into the final heat, but Leigh Lanham and Hynek Stichauer crossed the line first and second to level the scores. Lanham, riding as a guest in place of injured Jason Bunyan, scored 12 points, while Ricky Wells registered 11. The Potters, who lost six of their eight group matches, are guaranteed to finish bottom of their group table. Stoke fought back from the loss of teenage reserve Taylor Poole injury in heat three, and team manager Malcolm Vasey was pleased with the side's commitment. "Losing Taylor put our backs to the wall as he has been scoring well for us this season at reserve, but the lads got themselves together and really stuck in there," said Vasey, who swapped Scunthorpe for Stoke during the season. "I'm really pleased for all the lads tonight because it was a real battling performance from them out there." Bunyan, who suffered knee ligament damage in the win over Sheffield on 10 April, could return for Stoke's opening match in the Premier League against Workington on Saturday.
